A trademark that protects your book title comes into existence upon publication of the book. In order to protect your rights early during the writing phase, consider publishing a notification of the envisioned book title (Titelschutzanzeige). Claiming protection of your book title – called work title - in advance (vorgezogener Werktitelschutz) may prevent piracy.

An advanced notification has the same effect as the publication of the book, so long as the book is published within a reasonable time period. What is „reasonable“ is determined by the type of work. With regard to printed or electronic media, publication within six months after the advanced notification is considered appropriate in order to protect your rights.
